Religion 9: Understanding Catholic Christianity/
Adolescent Development

This course develops the student as a member of the Saint Elizabeth Catholic Christian community through introductory work in personality and sexual development and religious faith development in the Catholic Church. It is a survey of Catholic Christianity; the areas of creed, worship and moral code will be studied. Students will be guided through an examination of basic Catholic beliefs (creed) concerning faith, God’s nature, the Church, and the question of an afterlife. Students will attempt to answer the following questions: What does it mean to be a Catholic? Who is God and why should I believe in Him? What part do I play in my Christian community?

Religion 10: Hebrew Scriptures Christian Scriptures

Hebrew Scriptures is designed to give our students a sense of the roots of Christianity. Large segments of the Old Testament are read, including the major themes of the Exodus, Old Testament prehistory, law, prophets, and the exile.

Christian Scriptures is designed to help students learn how the New Testament was developed and to provide the students with an opportunity to deepen their knowledge of Jesus as the Good News. Students will undertake a study of the origin, purpose, and meaning of the New Testament with a particular focus on the historical Jesus, the Christ of Faith, the synoptic Gospels and the life and letters of St. Paul.

Religion 11: Christian Morality/Social Justice

Semester I: This goal of this course is to help students clarify their values and principles in light of Catholic Christian moral teaching. Students will explore traits of Christian character. They will also build decision making skills which engage “the sign of the times” with the overall themes of Scripture and the Christian virtues of wise judgement, justice, courage, wholeness, honesty, respect for persons and creation, compassion, reverence for life and peacemaking.

Semester II: This course is an overview of the major contemporary issues of peace and justice. The course is divided into three main sections. First, the students will look at the definition of social justice from a Christian perspective. Second, the class will address specific issues of racism, sexism, poverty, political oppression, and the work of peace. Third, students will discover their roles and function in achieving peace and justice.

Religion 12: Religions of North America (P)

The goal of this course is to help the student better understand people through the study of various religions as they are found in the world today. It will cover the origin of religion, the development of religion in the Western world, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and the religions of China. The student will grow in knowledge and come to a better understanding of others. This course is approved as a UC/CSU college preparatory elective.
